Breastfeeding can be a challenging yet rewarding experience, especially for Black mothers who may face unique stigmas and require strong community support. Proper preparation, support, and understanding are crucial for navigating the breastfeeding journey successfully.
- Consider prenatal breastfeeding classes: These classes provide hands-on learning about breastfeeding fundamentals, realistic expectations, and practical advice on topics like diaper changes and weaning. They help counter misinformation often found online. 1
- Understand that breastfeeding isn’t always natural: Many new mothers encounter difficulties such as latching problems and pain. Learning to trust one’s body and seeking support can improve the experience over time. 2
- Build a team of lactation professionals: International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, Certified Lactation Counselors, and breastfeeding educators can assist with clinical issues and general support. Resources like birth networks and specialized platforms can help locate experts. 2
- Recognize when to seek help: Pain during feeding is not normal and indicates the need for professional support. Common issues include sore nipples, low milk supply, thrush, plugged ducts, mastitis, and inverted nipples. 2
- Leverage community support at home: Assistance with daily tasks like meal preparation and household chores allows mothers to focus on nursing, especially in the critical first two weeks. Having breastfeeding essentials and nutritious foods on hand supports milk production. 3
- Connect with other nursing mothers: Joining breastfeeding support groups, baby cafes, or social media communities offers moral support, social interaction, and encouragement to continue breastfeeding despite challenges. Maintaining motivation and a support plan is key.

LIZZO’S FOOD FREEDOM: “Eat What Your Body WANTS” – Grammy Winner Drops Health Wisdom!
Lizzo’s latest health journey isn’t about chasing a number on the scale; it’s about learning to listen to her body and honor what it actually needs. In her own words, shifting from restriction to intuition has helped her find a healthier, more grounded relationship with food.
Eating With Intention, Not Guilt
Lizzo shares that she no longer demonizes cravings or labels foods as “good” or “bad.” Instead, she pays attention to what her body is asking for. If she wants something salty and crunchy, she’ll reach for chips or a pickle. If she wants sweets, she’ll eat cookies. If her body is calling for bread or butter, she allows herself to have it. That shift from punishment to permission has helped her step away from obsessive thinking and toward a more intuitive way of eating.
From Extremes to Intuitive Eating
She’s honest about the fact that her relationship with food hasn’t always been balanced. There have been seasons where she under-ate and others where she binged. Now, at 37, she says that “intuitively” listening to her body works best for her. For her, that means paying attention to hunger cues, cravings, and how food makes her feel physically, instead of forcing herself into rigid rules that leave her feeling deprived or out of control.
Redefining “Healthy” Food
These days, Lizzo says she’s focused on staying away from what she calls “nasty food” — heavily processed options full of chemicals that don’t nourish her body. She’s building her meals around protein and vegetables, and after a trip to Japan, she slowly brought some animal protein back into her diet. That inspired her to craft a menu that’s still flavorful, but anchored by things that actually fuel her body instead of just filling her up.
What Lizzo Actually Eats in a Day
For breakfast, she’s moved away from sweet, sugary starts and leans into savory plates to keep her blood sugar more stable. On one typical morning, she ate two scrambled eggs, a cup of bone broth with Celtic sea salt, chicken sausage, and a cauliflower hash brown. She’s also shared that since January 2023, this more intentional way of eating has helped her reduce her body fat by 16 percent and lower her BMI by 10.5 points, all while still enjoying food.
Lunch is usually what she describes as “carb-y, protein-y, and flavorful.” Think sandwiches, wraps, tuna in lettuce, sliced chicken breast, or a shredded Thai chicken salad. She’s not afraid of carbs; she simply respects them as part of a balanced plate instead of treating them like the enemy.
Honoring Her Body’s Limits
Lizzo also listens to how her body responds to timing, not just ingredients. Because she lives with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), she stops eating by around 5 p.m. to give her body time to digest before bed. Her dinners are rich in protein — soups, turkey meatloaf, cauliflower mash, green beans — and she’s learned that eating too late leaves her feeling uncomfortable and “burpy,” so she adjusts her routine to protect her rest and her health.
At the core of all this is a deeper message: Lizzo is choosing to trust her body instead of fighting it. She’s building a way of eating that respects her cravings, her health conditions, and her emotional well-being — and that kind of alignment is its own form of radical self-love.

Remembering Imani Dia Smith: The Light Broadway Never Forgot
The stage lights may have dimmed, but Imani Dia Smith’s spirit still shines bright.
A beloved performer and former child actress from The Lion King’s Broadway cast, Imani Dia Smith has passed away at just 26 years old — the victim of a violent tragedy that has shaken both the theater community and those who loved her most.
Authorities in Edison, New Jersey, responded to a 911 call on the morning of December 21, 2025, discovering Smith with fatal stab wounds. She was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. Prosecutors have charged Smith’s boyfriend, Jordan D. Jackson‑Small, 35, with first‑degree murder and additional charges related to weapons possession and child endangerment.

Go Fund Me Imani leaves behind her 3‑year‑old son and her devoted parents. She also leaves two younger siblings and a network of family and friends. They describe her as radiant. She was a young woman who carried her light beyond the spotlight and into every space she entered.
Her aunt, Kira Helper, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs, therapy for the family, legal proceedings, and continued care for Imani’s child and their family dog.
“She leaves behind a 3‑year‑old son, her parents, her two younger siblings, and an extended family, friends, and community who loved her so very much,” Helper wrote.
Imani’s story reminds us why the work of protecting, supporting, and uplifting Black women can never be paused. The arts world—and the Black community at large—has lost a light that was just beginning to shine at full strength.
As we grieve, we also recommit: to love deeper, protect stronger, and speak louder for those whose dreams and lives deserved to continue.
Rest in power and infinite peace, Imani Dia Smith. 💜
